Bridgeport ... A Community Living and Growing Together

REGULAR Town Board Meeting: Wednesday, April 2, 2024 | Election Commission Agendas & Minutes | More Information: Agendas  , Minutes  , Schedules

The building department is responsible for enforcing the building and other codes of the State of Michigan. These are the Michigan Building Code (MBC), The Michigan Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings (MRCEB), the Michigan Residential Code (MRC), the National Electrical Code (NEC), Michigan Plumbing Code (MPC), Michigan Mechanical Code (MMC), Accessibility Code (ICC A117.1) and the State Energy Code.

Existing buildings and dwellings not under construction are inspected under the International Property Maintenance Code.

Every three (3) years, the state revises and updates these codes to ensure that all structures built or even sometimes existing must meet a certain minimum level of safety.

Bridgeport Township has 1 full time building inspector, and 2 part time inspectors for electrical, plumbing, and heating installations. The Building Official runs the department and works hand in hand with the trade inspectors and the Fire Department.

The Fire Department enforces two codes. These are the International Fire Code, and the Uniform Fire Code published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Enforcement ensures that buildings meet a level of safety in fire protection and other hazards.

Before any structure is built, permits must be obtained and plans submitted. The building official/inspector/plan reviewer will then review the construction drawings to ensure that the building will meet the building codes in effect. This review is also, when applicable, reviewed by other inspectors, fire department, and possibly other agencies when the proposed construction or development is commercial or a large residential development. After the review or reviews are completed and approved, the building inspector will issue the construction permits applicable to the project.

It is important to first check with the building department for information on required permitting. As the codes change and evolve so the methods and practices used in construction. Therefor it is beneficial to contact the building inspector prior to starting a project so there are no misunderstandings on permits and specifications.
