Fire Department Assessment

Shall the entire unincorporated* portion of Bridgeport Charter Township, Saginaw County, Michigan be created into a special assessment district under 1951 PA 33, as amended, in order to raise money by special assessment for defraying costs of fire protection, fire protection equipment and buildings, and for the operation of the same, and shall Bridgeport Charter Township be permitted to raise money by special assessment for fire protection purposes in a total annual amount of $190,125.00, not to exceed $45.00 per tax parcel with one or more structures and no assessment per vacant tax parcel, for a period of ten (10) years?

How the Money will be used

The money raised by the assessment will all go to maintaining our existing operations only. Three capital funds will be established for our fire station, apparatus (vehicles), and equipment. Increased cost coupled with decreased tax revenue means the fire department can no longer rely solely on the general fund for financial support.

Our needs were identified by performing a thorough analysis of these areas of our operation and performing cost projections based on historical information. Our fire station was built in 1972, and is need of updating and significant repair. Three of our fire trucks are 16 years and older. Our air packs are approaching 11 years. As our equipment ages, we are seeing an increase in maintenance costs. At some point, this equipment will no longer be serviceable and will need to be replaced.
